The spectacular blue Nile falls, locally known as ‘Tis Abay’ (Smoke of the Nile), are found nearby Tis Abay town which is situated 30km south of Bahir Dar. This fall plunges over a 45m-high rock face to form one of Africa’s most spectacular waterfalls. The 18th century traveler James Bruce, who is often credited as the first European to see Tis Abay described the water fall as “a magnificent sight, that ages, added to the greatest length of human life, would not efface or eradicate from my memory; it struck me with a kind of stupor, and a total oblivion of where I was, and of every sublunary concern.” At the foot of the hill is located Alata Bridge that is said to be built in the 17th century during the reign of Emperor Susenyos and, It is believed to be the first bridge built over the Blue Nile.
